Directive 2002/96/EC, also known as WEEE, is designed to prevent and limit the flow of waste equipment to landfills through policies for the reuse and recycling of equipment and its components. To provide incentives for the introduction of environmental considerations in the design of goods, the Directive assigns electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers the economic burden of treating, recovering and disposing of end-of-life equipment.

This Directive has been transposed into national law through Legislative Decree 151/2005, which requires producers of such equipment to set up a national system for the collection, transport, and environmentally sound treatment of end-of-life products and to finance and manage its operation. It also requires marking and supplying information to users. As a component producer, Meccanotecnica Umbra does not directly fall within the scope of the WEEE Directive but it has introduced environmental considerations into the design of its products.

The RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC and subsequent supplements, restricting the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in electrical and electronic equipment has been transposed into national law through Legislative Decree 151/2005. As a producer of electrical and electronic equipment components, Meccanotecnica Umbra has adapted its products to the RoHS Directive in order to respond promptly to the needs of its customers. A declaration of conformity for our products can be obtained by contacting the Quality Management Department.

Regulation (EC) no.1907/2006 REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals), entered into force on 1 June 2007, concerning the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals, establishes an EU-level framework for the regularisation of all chemical substances on the market. In particular, the Regulation foresees the registration of all substances produced or imported into the European Union that are equal to or exceed one tonne per year. Registration of substances means that manufacturers and importers of substances and preparations (mixtures of two or more substances) are obliged to submit basic information on the characteristics of the substances to the European Agency. Meccanotecnica Umbra is in a position to reassure its customers that the substances used in its products respect the provisions of the REACH Regulation. A declaration of conformity for our products can be obtained by contacting the Quality Management Department.

Meccanotecnica Umbra has long worked as a partner to several renowned international pump manufacturers operating in the drinking water, beverage and food industries, in full compliance with the stringent standards and safety regulations that apply to the food/beverage industry. Meccanotecnica Umbra has a wide range of standard mechanical seals certified by WRAS, ASC, NSF (see official list) and other certification bodies and offers its customers the possibility of designing and developing custom products that comply with the above-mentioned certifications upon specific request.

The ATEX Directives (Directive 94/9/EC and Directive 1999/92/EC) regulate, throughout the EU, the marketing and the use of equipment and protective systems, electrical and non, in potentially explosive atmospheres due to the presence of flammable gases, vapours and mists, as well as combustible dust, by defining the essential health and safety requirements. Transposed in Italy respectively by Presidential Decree 126/1998 and Legislative Decree 233/2003, the Directives entered into force in July 2003; the adjustment period granted to users ended on 30 June 2006. Specifically, Directive 94/9/EC regulated manufacturers, requiring them to carry out a specific risk analysis on commercialised equipment in order to obtain the certificate of conformity from Notified Bodies for their use in a potentially explosive atmosphere, whereas Directive 1999/92/EC made users aware of their responsibility concerning the identification of all work environments where a potentially explosive atmosphere may be present or generated, in addition to the consequent inspection of the existing equipment in order to guarantee the minimum requirements listed in the Directive. Meccanotecnica Umbra offers its customers a range of mechanical seals certified in accordance with the requirements of the ATEX Directives.
In addition, documentation is available on how these seals can be used on equipment that complies with these aforementioned Directives. The certificate of conformity sets forth the appropriate safety instructions in view of the possible risks, their causes and any related measures.
